Taipa Village Cultural Association Presents “Murmurs – Storytelling Illustrations by Yang Sio Maan”

25/09/2023

Taipa Village Cultural Association takes great pleasure in presenting the heart-warming illustration exhibition “Murmurs”, which showcases a collection of storytelling illustrations by Macau artist Yang Sio Maan. The exhibition is complemented by the launch of the artist’s first picture book, “Mr. Matos Went to Buy Tomatoes”, published by Fizzy Ink Publishing.

Yang has a highly distinctive illustrative style that in recent years she has also applied to objects and art installations. Her fresh approach to representations of daily life creates a warm, imaginative and richly poetic atmosphere that stands as counterpoint to the hectic, often aggressive pace of modern life. Her solo exhibition at Taipa Village Art Space allows her to share the comforting, whimsical vision of her storytelling.

In the exhibition, Yang showcases three collections of illustrations. “Mr. Matos Went to Buy Tomatoes” consists of a display of printed picture books, original sketches and an engaging art installation at the venue that represents the story itself. A second collection showcases nine giclée prints from selected illustrations she recently created for Voice & Verse Poetry Magazine, a Hong Kong poetry print publication. Lastly, the exhibition presents a new interpretation featuring a comic entitled “Lemon Tea” that explores the small, simple pleasures of daily life.

As an independent illustrator and visual narrator based in Macau, Yang finds colour in the everyday stuff of life, capturing the emotions that reside within. She is comfortable working with soft tones and metaphors that involve quiet characters wandering in faraway landscapes and dreams. Yang is a part-time lecturer at the Macau Polytechnic University and also accepts commissions to work with clients locally and internationally in areas including visual art, book design and alternative publishing. She is a versatile artist and her work has gained worldwide recognition, notably at the World Illustration Awards, the 3X3 International Illustration Show and the Hiii Illustration awards.

“It is our honour to invite esteemed illustration artist Yang to present her solo exhibition in Taipa Village to inspire the community with the warmth of her works,” said João Ó, President of the Executive Board at Taipa Village Cultural Association. “The three collections of illustrations encapsulates the essence of her unique illustration styles and conveys a rich testimonial of her creative work journey.”

Taipa Village Cultural Association continues to bring together the endeavours of local and international artistic talents across different genres to exhibit myriad artworks in Taipa Village. This unique exhibition further cements Taipa Village’s position as a leading cultural and artistic destination in Macau, underlining its invaluable contribution to the promotion of the territory’s cultural and creative industries.
