Taipa Village Cultural Association Exclusively Presents Show-Off 3.0, an Exhibition by Three Art Collectors

24/02/2025

Taipa Village Cultural Association is delighted to present Show-Off 3.0, the third instalment of our accomplished art collectors' exhibition in Taipa Village. Building on the cultural influence brought to the community by the first show in the series, Show-off 3.0 is a treasure trove of art acquired by three renowned collectors whose backgrounds are a study in diversity: founder of Creative Macau Lúcia Lemos, publisher Carlos Morais José and architect Rita Machado.

The exhibition sees the trio share impressive collections they have amassed over the years, both locally and internationally, including beloved artworks that adorn the most intimate spaces in their homes. The show explores ideas related to collecting art and aims to promote collecting as a cultural asset that starts with individual initiative, but which may also broaden a sense of commonwealth, foster vitality in society, add diversity to local economies – including though such activities as art trading – and nurture local and international talent. Each collection in the exhibition reveals aspects of the collector's personality.

As the founder of Creative Macau, a cultural centre whose mission is to promote the creative industries in the territory, Lúcia Lemos has been involved in the promotion of local artists for more than two decades through the interpretation of various mediums, including painting, graphic design, 3D art, photography and film. She has also been the director of the Sound & Image Challenge International Short Film Festival since 2010. As an artist herself, who developed her skills in black-and-white photography and video, her special relationship with images stems from her many years of exposure to the artistic milieu of the Portuguese city of Porto. Her chosen collection comprises mainly vibrant, colourful paintings by local and foreign artists.

Carlos Morais José is a poet, writer, editor and journalist who graduated with a degree in anthropology from Lisbon's Universidade Nova de Lisboa. He is currently the director of the daily newspaper Hoje Macau and is responsible for the publishing houses COD and Livros do Meio. Morais José's collection recalls a subtle yet complex relationship between a scholar and gongshi viewing stones – rocks with a particular aesthetic beauty – which appear to the untrained eye to be simply decorative stones, but which prompt an aesthete to dwell on matters that transcend their appearance.

Rita Machado is interested in the intersections of Western and Eastern culture, and urban design and architectural design. She completed an architecture degree at the University of Porto, writing a thesis entitled "Macau, (in) finite city". She is the co-founder and principal architect at Impromptu Projects, an award-winning studio focused on the design of architectural projects, ephemeral structures, interior design, public spaces and projects aimed at the local community, as well as the study of the social relevance of design. Machado is involved in curating and promoting Macau's cultural scene with her partner. Their collection is based on their relationships with many local and international artists, with some of whom they have forged lasting friendships.

"It is our honour to invite the three art collectors to showcase their diverse art collections in Taipa Village, following the success of our experimental shows during the past two years," said João Ó, President of Taipa Village Cultural Association. "This rare and special exhibition aims to explore the nature of collecting and prompt visually stimulating conversations on the cultural possessions of individuals with very specific, highly personal interests."

Taipa Village Cultural Association continues to bring together the endeavours of local and international artistic talents to exhibit myriad artworks in Taipa Village. Show-Off 3.0 further cements Taipa Village's position as a leading cultural and artistic destination in Macau, and underlines its invaluable contribution to the promotion of the territory's cultural and creative industries.
