Presented by the Macau Scientific and Cultural Centre (CCCM) in Lisbon, "The Wondersome and Peculiar Voyages" is a contemporary art exhibition showcasing the work of Macau visual anthropologist Cheong Kin Man, Polish artist Marta Stanisława Sala, and German filmmaker Deborah Uhde. Curated by Colombian researcher Lorena Tabares Salamanca, the exhibition explores themes of cross-cultural dialogue, identity, language, and memory through a wide range of artistic media. It is currently on view in the Temporary Exhibition Hall of CCCM's Macau Museum.
Cheong and Sala present seven collaborative works, five of which are being shown for the first time. Highlights include an experimental video installation that draws on interviews with members of the Macanese diaspora in Brazil to examine migration and linguistic heritage. The project was supported by the Cultural Affairs Bureau and the Instituto Internacional de Macau. Another centerpiece, "The Compass of Utopia", is a textile and bamboo installation that reflects historical and contemporary ties between Poland and Macau. The piece incorporates philosophical and poetic reflections through color structures inspired by the six tons of Cantonese and the metrical rhythms of classical Chinese poetry. Also featured is "Apocalypses", a textile installation and the now extended artist book, originally commissioned by curators Lam Siu Man and Pal Lok and premiered at the 2023 Art Macao Biennale.
"The Wondersome and Peculiar Voyages" offers a multilayered reflection on identity, memory, and cultural hybridity in an increasingly interconnected world. The exhibition is held under the honorary patronage of the Polish and Colombian Embassies in Portugal, and supported by the Polish Ministry of Culture and National Heritage, Fundação Oriente, the City of Kraków, in partnership with Goethe-Instituto Portugal, Poland's Boym Institute, and Macau's Babel Cultural Association.
