Ark-Association of Macau Art Proudly Presents
Its Creative Program "Art Quintet"
Unveiling the second show “Suirenshi” by Vanda Chan

13/06/2023

Ark-Association of Macau Art takes great pleasure to present its annual program entitled "Art Quintet" between May and September this year, featuring the exhibitions by five local artists under the inspiration of “Five Elements” - Metal, Wood, Water, Fire, and Earth. The program aims to showcase the artists’ diverse creativity towards each of the elements through a multitude of media and interpretations, as well as impelling art exchange between the artists and audience through the conveyed messages from the artworks.

The concept of the Five Elements dates back to the Warring States period in China, where it was a philosophical system in political science. Confucianism classified all things in the universe into five categories based on their characteristics - Metal, Wood, Water, Fire, and Earth - and later referred to them as the Five Elements. This is an abstract summary of the five different attributes of all things in the universe.

The second exhibition of the series will be taking place on 21st June 2023 at Cafe Voyage, featuring the "Suirenshi" - illustration by local artist Vanda Chan who elaborates the element of “Fire” with her creations through digital drawing.

“Suirenshi"
According to ancient Chinese mythology, the legendary figure of Suirenshi invented the method of drilling wood to create fire, which opened the door to the development of human civilization. Since then, humans have continuously improved their knowledge of fire, inventing a variety of cooking utensils and methods with using different type of materials in the earth. Fire has become an important element in human culture, representing knowledge and creativity.

The exhibition "Suirenshi" focuses on the element of fire, using it as a creative concept to showcase illustrations related to the culture of cooking with fire. Through the illustrations, visitors can learn how humans cooked using fire before the advent of modern electronic kitchen appliances, including steaming, boiling, braising, roasting, and baking, and feel the constant pursuit of knowledge and creativity.

Visitors can examine various cooking cultures and discover how humans are constantly progressing. What drives this progress? Is it the desire for delicious food, the pursuit of a better quality of life, or human creativity? These questions will provoke visitors to think and explore during the exhibition.

The "Suirenshi" illustration exhibition will lead visitors to explore the unique relationship between humans, food, and fire, and experience the charm and depth of cooking with fire.
